Paphos Map:

What makes it great

City of culture: Paphos was once the capital of Cyprus, and the evidence of its importance can still be seen today in ancient ruins like the Roman governor’s palace, as well as a Byzantine Castle and even a famous Pillar where St. Paul was said to have been lashed. As well as this vein of history, Paphos has legendary roots in Greek mythology too, as it is said that Aphrodite was born here, rising from the sea at Petra Tou Romiou.

Stylish holidays: As well as all the historical sites to see here, Paphos can boast some lovely beaches and many classy bars, clubs and restaurants. In fact, the luxury all inclusive holidays offered in the exclusive Aphrodite Hills have recently been described as one of the top five luxury resorts in the world by Forbes Magazine. And as with many modern up-and-coming developments, you’ll find two fantastic golf courses close to Paphos too.

Sights worth seeing

Kato Paphos Archaeological Park: Within this one park you’ll discover many of the historical wonders of Paphos, so it should definitely be the first site on your list. Inside you’ll see the grand palace of the House of Dionysus, the House of Aeon and the House of Orpheus. Much of the buildings themselves have been reduced to rubble, but the floor mosaics were buried under the soil for over 16 centuries meaning they’re almost perfectly preserved. You’ll see on these floors depictions of monster slayings, wild animals and wine festivals amongst other things. It’s fascinating stuff, and it’s these mosaics, as well as the many other historical sites that have put Paphos on the UNESCO treasures list.

Tombs of the Kings: Another source of interest is these shady tombs which impressively have many of their columns still intact. The Greeks are not precious about you walking around historical sites, so you’re free to wonder among the tombs and touch the structures which are over 2,000 years old. The sites may give rise to ideas of the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, but the title is actually a little overstated in the sense that many of the people buried here were actually nobles and aristocrats rather than actual royalty. That’s not to say it isn’t a fascinating site though!

Paphos Castle: Also known as Saranta Kolones, Paphos Castle is an elegant Byzantine castle built back in the 13th century. It was designed to protect the harbour of the area and as such is built right by the water’s edge. As you can imagine, this gives some beautiful photo opportunities at night, when the castle’s reflection is illuminated in the water by the surrounding lights.

Things to do

Water sports: Having several beaches in the area, Paphos has gradually grown to have a strong focus on water sports, and all types of watery activities can be enjoyed here, from jet skiing to windsurfing and deep sea diving.

Golfing greats: There are three golf courses within the area of Paphos, so you’ve plenty of choice if you fancy getting a few rounds of golf in on your holidays! The impressive golf club Minthis Hills is the oldest in Cyprus, and it’s in a truly wonderful location set in the grounds of a charming 12th century monastery. It’s also at quite a high altitude ensuring cooling breezes even during the summer months. Then there’s the Secret Valley Golf Club, which is located close to Petra tou Romiou, the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite. Finally, the newest addition to the golfing scene in Paphos is at the exclusive resort of Aphrodite Hills. Within the grounds of the amazing all inclusive hotels found here, you’ll come across the Aphrodite Hills Golf Course. You’ll appreciate the perfectly trimmed fairways, immaculate greens and stunning seaside vistas.

Super Aphrodite Water Park: This fun water park has all the slides and rides you’d expect of such a place, with attractions such as the exciting kamikaze and a surprisingly relaxing wave machine!

Beaches

Coral Bay: 13km north of Paphos, the further travelling distance to this beach is worth your while. A 600m horseshoe-shaped crescent of golden sand, the sea at Coral Bay is also incredibly calm and welcoming. As one of the best beaches in Paphos, Coral Bay gets very popular during the summer season as many people come here to enjoy the many water sports activities on offer.

Municipal Beach: This beach is in a very convenient location, close to Paphos town centre. It’s quite a pleasant, secluded spot, backed by green shrubs and with intensely golden sand which leads into mirror-like calm water. You can also look out across the coastline and enjoy very scenic views of the pine tree lined headlands.

Faros Beach: This golden sandy beach is appreciated for its wide, flat expanse which affords you plenty of space for sunbathing. Whilst lounging in the hot Cypriot sun here you can also enjoy the breathtaking view of mountainous vistas in the distance.

Tasty places

Ficardo: This warm, friendly restaurant is very highly rated for its great service and perfectly cooked food. The owner of the restaurant, Nikolas, will often take the time to have a chat, while his wife creates delicious delights in the kitchen. The cuisine includes utterly authentic Cypriot food such as spinach-wrapped feta cheese and slow-cooked lamb, as well as classic favourites like steak fillet and salted sea bass. Nikolas even hopes to create his own fresh oil from the olive trees grown around the restaurant!

Gabor: This charming restaurant offers beautifully cooked dishes with many available as great value set menu deals. The focus is on flavoursome classics with offerings such as lemon sole with lobster sauce, beef tartar and steak in diane sauce. Entertainment is also included with your meal too, as you’ll often be able to enjoy the music of pianists and singers whilst eating.

Cavallini: There are many Greek tavernas in Paphos, so if you fancy a bit of a change you won’t go wrong with this restaurant. It offers authentic Italian cuisine which captures the flavours of the Mediterranean wonderfully. Expect classics such as creamy tagliatelle, spaghetti Bolognese and garlic-infused mushrooms.

Nightlife

City lights: Being quite a major city, Pahpos enjoys lively and varied nightlife with many different bars and restaurants vying for your attention. The aptly named Bar Street mainly features British pubs such as the themed castle style Robin Hood and the fun karaoke bar Tropical Nights. The Rose pub is also a great place to go for an entertaining night out, as there are often live bands to listen to for free while you enjoy a few drinks.

Lively nights: Bar Street also caters to younger people on nights out too. At fun places with names such as Flintstones, Bubbles and Hollywood, you can imagine the atmosphere gets pretty raucous, and you’d be right! And if you fancy making your night last even longer head to Rainbow. Most clubs have to turn off their music around 2am to avoid disturbing local neighbours, but Rainbow gets around this by being underground! So expect loud dance music and a fantastic atmosphere right up to 6am.

Shopping

Lots of variety: When it comes to shopping, Paphos seems to take the approach of the more the better! You’ll find lots of different products here, from original handicrafts such as pottery, carvings and lace to quality leather goods at bargain prices. Either way, you’re sure to find something to bring back that’s unique and original. But if you’d prefer to shop for some designer or High Street labels, you’ll find that Paphos offers that too! You’ll also be surprised to see there’s a huge Debenhams near the harbour in Kato Paphos.

Laikia Agora: Literally translated from Greek as ‘people’s market’, the daily stalls set up here offer all types of local produce including delicacies from Greek cuisine, arts and crafts and bargain clothes.
